All Aboard the Silver Star!

On Friday October 29, Amtrak's train 91, the southbound Silver Star, was running a bit behind schedule. So I was actually able to catch it in daylight. If you were ever curious about boarding an Amtrak train, please watch this video. If you weren't, please watch anyway. It's short.  Thanks!

Night Train Action

Since before the holidays, the profile of NS 191 has apparently been all over the map. These days, it can seemingly depart at any hour of the day or night. But whenever I can catch it, it's always worth waiting for. On this chilly night in early January, it had a decent assortment of ex-SOU equipment, along with a couple of long cuts of track maintenance equipment, all capably under the charge of a pair of C6Ms. Speaking of fallen flags, the MOW cuts have a nice selection of CR tie gons, undoubtedly dating back to PC, PRR, NYC, and E-L.  Enjoy. Thank you so much for watching!

What Do 35,200 Horses Sound Like?

SEVEN 4,400 Horsepower Locomotives. PLUS an SD70ACe DPU!  I'm not sure what possessed me to wait by the R Line North that afternoon after I had narrowly missed the 192 on the R Line South a bit earlier, but I'm extremely glad that I did. I heard over the scanner that 12R was still building.  Now, 12R is a pretty massive train on most days, but this pretty much surpasses them all. And the train crew was one of the best.   Part I is nothing but diesel. Part II will be the train itself.  Please enjoy. Thank you for watching!

A Short Video of the Reading Heritage Unit

Wednesday's day trip to Spartanburg, proved to be extremely fortuitously timed. The Reading Heritage Unit was in the area as the lead unit on the Herzog "candy cane" ballast train doing some work. Have I mentioned that the Reading unit was one of the very few heritage units that I had not photographed?   Some of the most recent stills that I had seen of NS 1067 showed her looking somewhat the worse for wear, so I was pleasantly surprised to her paintjob looking fresh, clean, and shiny.  And the horn show that the engineer provided was absolutely the cherry on top.  Thank you for watching!

A Classic Locomotive. Times Two, Times Two

This episode is a particular treat for me on multiple levels. First, the NS P75 local seems to be back on its usual, reliable lunchtime departure schedule. Second, and perhaps equally (more?) important is that its power so far this week has consisted of a pair of SD40-2s running elephant style. The lead unit is ex-SOU and the trailing unit is ex-N&W. What could be more perfect? And just wait until you check out that horn!

A Pair of Union Pacific SD70ACes

I received word around mid-morning that a pair of UP ACes would be powering the NS 238 mixed intermodal/manifest.  At exactly high noon they came roaring around the bend, and I caught it all. Some pretty interesting tagging, too.  Thank you for watching!

BNSF and UP Action in One Video

On January 28th, I received a tip that NS 15R would be arriving with one NS unit, one BNSF, and two UP motors leading. That info proved to be rock solid, and the weather even managed to cooperate. It was a beautiful evening, and a beautiful train.  After the last car had cleared the crossing and I turned the camera off to head back to my car, something I didn't count on happened. I see this old guy standing across the street videoing me with his cellphone. Not the train. Me. He then proceeds to the side of the street where I'm parked and takes several stills of my car and takes closeups of my license plate with me standing not three feet away from him. It was the very first time that anyone had hassled me for railfanning in South Carolina.  Mind you, I was parked on a public street and videoing the train from a public sidewalk.  Next time I shoot there, I'm not going to turn off my camera so quickly.   Thank you for watching. And listening to my story.

High and Wide

On Friday night, I was staked out in one of my usual spots waiting for the NS 191 to depart Andrews Yard. All of a sudden,  the crossing gates started going down and the lights began flashing. No horn, though. I bolted out of my car car in time to see this special novement of, I guess it's some kind of electric generation equipment, gingerly making its way across Catawba, led be a wide vision caboose with two guys standing on its porch acting as lookout,  Definitely not something you see every day. Or every night, for that matter.  Thank you for watching!
