It was a Thursday night. January 26, 2023. It was a warm evening, about fifty degrees. But then again, this is Columbia, South Carolina. My partner was me. The boss was Captain Myself. It was the nightwatch. We had received word that the Norfolk & Western heritage unit, NS 8103, would be leading NS 192. So we staked out on Catawba Street. A little after 8:00 P.M. 192 was still nowhere to be seen. But 191 was on its way out of Andrews, toward Macon. And among the lead units were two pair of GP40-2/Road Slug (Cow/Calf) combos was NS 714 ("Joe Friday").
